HELIOS 2004 SOLAR CAR TEAM

On the occasion of the Cultural Olympic Games and with the support of Hellenic Culture Organisation S.A., the international PHAETHON 2004 race is organised from 22 until 29 May 2004 in Greece. Organizers of the race are the Hellenic Institute of Electric Vehicles (HEL.I.E.V.), the Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (E.L.P.A.) and the Technical Publications S.A. (4 Wheels). For the support of the Greek participation team, a nation-wide competiotion was held regarding the design of such a vehicle. In this competition, the team of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.) has managed to receive the first prize with the HELIOS 2004 prototype vehicle.

The Phaethon 2004 race is devided in two events. The first event consists of a Rally race that covers a total distance of 795 km (Athens - Patras - Olympia - Athens). It is divided in five legs and with at least six special stages. The second event is a circuit race (36km minimal distance).. The race will be held according to FIA technical regulations in the Megara race circuit..

Solar car HELIOS 2004 will be the representative of the greek participation in the race. During the remaining time -untill May 2004-, the designing team will be dealing with the manufacturing of the vehicle. Primary goals for the Helios 2004 team are both destinction in the race as well as the acquisition of experience and know-how in the field of alternative energy sources. The team is consisted of teaching stuff and students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical of Engineering of A.U.Th.

On 11/5/2004 at noon, the solar vehicle Helios 2004 was completely destroyed from a fire that broke up in the facilities of an electronics company, where the vehicle was sent for the installation of electronic components. It is therefore no longer possible for Helios 2004 to participate in the international race Phaethon 2004, which is scheduled to start on 22/5/2004.

No doubt the team and sponsors were devastated by the loss of their car.  We at Speedace HQ would like to offer our commiserations and wish all those involved.  We hope the team members enjoyed participating and learned from the experience - better luck next time. NK
