AIMS OF THE PROJECT
1.Develop
easily available and low cost technology. 2.Create
an awakening in the country about solar technology through electronic and
print media. 3.Become
one of the very few teams from Asia to participate in the event and test
our vehicle in front of the world media. 4.Develop
technical skills of the Indian engineering students by providing them the
technical know-how and giving them practical experience. 5.Develop
management skills, both human and resource management and inculcate
desirable qualities like communication and leadership, apart from ability
to work as a team. 6.Develop
technical skills in the field of solar technology, dynamics, machine
design, automobile design etc. 7.Gain
practical experience in design and fabrication. 8.Represent
India and Asia on a world platform. 9.To win maximum awards in the PANASONIC WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE 2007.
The heart of the Delhi University solar car is the electrical system which is made up of batteries and power electronics. The electrical system controls and manages all the power that enters and exits the system. The electrical components include a 1500w dc brush less hub motor ,a motor controller ,peak power controller and other parts. The battery used is a set of Lead acid Gel VRLA batteries giving a voltage of about 48V at 60Ah(12 volt contributed by a single battery). The batteries are used as a backup when the solar intensity is less. The solar array is the vehicle's only source of power during the cross-country Race. The Solar array is made up of many (often several hundred) photovoltaic solar cells that convert the sun's energy into electricity.
Mechanical
The mechanical systems of a solar car are generally simple in concept, but they are designed to minimize friction and weight while maintaining the strength needed to handle the various road conditions. The mechanical systems include the suspension, brakes, steering, wheels, and tires. The drive train will consist of the electric Hub motor which is connected directly to the rim of the tyre. The main goals when designing the body are to minimize the aerodynamic drag, maximize the exposure to solar insolation, minimize weight, and maximize safety. The weight of the car is approx. 350 kg. The exterior of the car is deliberately made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic.

SOLAR CAR EVENTS
American World Solar Challenge - Formula Sun Australian World Solar Challenge Canadian Solar Discovery Challenge Dream Cup Solar Car Race Suzuka 2003 - Japan Japanese World Solar Car Rallye North American Solar Challenge Solar Express - Solar Bike Race
During these competitions, students learn about solar panels, electric motors, electronics, vehicle chassis, bodywork, aerodynamics, suspension, batteries and how to solve practical problems during the design process, while working as a team. It's demanding stuff and more fun that laying in bed watching TV, where individuals may seek inspiration, but achieve very little.
