Alex
Askaroff has been a sewing machine engineer since leaving college
in Eastbourne,
Sussex.
Apart from servicing and repairing machines, he restores and sells
collectible examples all over planet
earth. Alex is the son of Igor, a Russian
émigré, and an Austrian seamstress, Rosemarie,
who settled in England and raised six sons, while founding a business
making buggy capes, quilts and other cot accessories for babies -
named Simplantex, and later Premier Baby. During his travels as a
travelling repair man, he collected stories from his clients which he
wrote into books. One customer was able to shed light on the history
of a Building in Lime
Park, which is now Herstmonceux
Museum. Big thanks to Ron
Saunders for sharing memories of his childhood, and his father's
job as chief engineer at the old Electricity
Generating Station C 1900. As it turned out the earliest surviving
example of which in the whole world, and a potential future UNESCO
World Heritage Site. That may otherwise have remained undiscovered.
