State University has a proud tradition of fielding electric land
speed record cars that consistently raise the world record on the
Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
The student run team
works out of the
well funded Center for Automotive
Research. They started in the Buckeye Bullet
1 in 2003-4. Progressing to the hydrogen
fuel cell car the hit 302.877 mph in the flying mile and 303.025 mph in the flying
kilometer, and then another
battery
car in 2010, and finally the Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3.
SEPTEMBER
21 2016 - NEW ELECTRIC WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD
The Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3 (VBB-3) shattered the previous world record of 307.6 mph (495 kph), set by the Ohio State-Venturi team in 2010. The new world record is pending certification by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the worldwide motorsports governing body, in Category A Group VIII Class 8.
In the middle of this season’s first record-attempt run, the VBB-3 reached a top speed of 358mph (576kph). However,
FIA certification is based on the average speed of two runs, made in opposite directions and within 60 minutes.
“The students taking part in this land speed project are incredibly motivated,” said David Cooke, staff team liaison and previous leader of the team, who has dedicated the past 10 years to making history with electric racing. “On top of full class schedules and homework, they often spend over 40 hours per week working on the vehicle. It’s that perseverance that continues to lead the team on the road to success.”
Eleven miles of pristine track – a dry, compact layer of salt – and clear, sunny weather produced the perfect setting for this year’s record-setting runs.
A core group of 10 undergraduate and graduate students at The
Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research, in partnership with Monaco-based electric vehicle manufacturer, Venturi Automobiles, spent the last six years designing and building the electric streamliner. Venturi lends its expertise in electric vehicles and significant sponsorship funding to the students.
The record-setting car is propelled by two custom electric motors developed by Venturi Automobiles, and is powered by over two megawatts of lithium ion
batteries produced by A123 Systems. The vehicle was piloted by Roger Schroer, veteran team driver from the Ohio State affiliated Transportation Research Center, the nation’s leading independent automotive proving ground and vehicle testing organization in East Liberty, Ohio.
The team’s faculty advisor and Center for Automotive Research Director Giorgio Rizzoni said the VBB-3 boasts significant advances in power electronic systems and automated transmission. “The progress made this year is a very important step in the quest to reach the 400 miles per hour goal,” said Rizzoni. “The support of Venturi and of numerous other industry partners is recognition of this program’s value in producing the next generation of engineers. As always, team members have a bright future in the automotive industry.”
About Venturi Automobile
Venturi Automobiles was founded in 1984 in France as a sports car manufacturer. Purchased in 2000 by Gildo Pallanca Pastor, it focuses on innovation in the field of electric vehicles by harnessing the most advanced technological solutions in this area. Venturi expertise extends from urban cars to high-performance vehicles
The OSU Buckeye Bullet raised the record for the fastest EV in the US to 257 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats in October 2003, besting the old record of 251 mph held by White Lightning. The 31 feet long streamliner is powered by a 400 - 500 hp electric motor and 12,000 nickel-metal hydride batteries! The car is the product of a collaboration between students of the Ohio State University's Center for Automotive Research-Intelligent Transportation, its faculty and private industry.
