Solectria, the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium (NAVC), the US Department of Transportation, and EVermont (the Vermont Electric Vehicle Program) have teamed up to develop a hybrid-electric version of Blue Bird’s popular “All American” model school bus.
Solectria provides drive systems to several leading international bus manufacturers for use in their electric and hybrid-electric buses. Solectria components, including motors, motor controllers, generators, and battery chargers, are used in buses ranging in size from 22-foot to 40-foot models.
More than 3,000,000 passengers are transported annually on buses powered by Solectria components.
Description: The hybrid-electric Blue Bird "All American" is designed to carry 66 students plus driver in a safe and reliable environment.
Operating in hybrid mode, the “All American” can travel hundreds of miles between fill-ups of its diesel fuel tank. Operating in its “pure electric” zero-emission mode, the “All American” can travel up to 60 miles on one charge of its lead acid battery pack. Solectria hybrid school bus will nearly double your fuel economy and out accelerates a conventional diesel bus!
The bus offers a maximum speed of 55 mph, and can climb a maximum grade of 12% at low speed.
Standard Equipment
Testing conducted by EVermont found that this hybrid school bus uses 29% less energy than a conventional ICE-powered school bus. Furthermore, it produces 59% lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO).
Solectria, Blue Bird Corporation, the New York Power Authority, and the New York City Department of Transportation teamed up to develop an all-electric version of Blue Bird's popular "TC200" model school bus.

Description:
The electric “All American” provides a range of 60 miles on both a standard “School Bus Driving Cycle” and on a standard “Rural Driving Cycle.” At highway speeds, it can travel 50 miles on one charge of its lead acid battery pack.
The bus offers a maximum speed of 55 mph, and can climb a maximum grade of 12% at low speed. The bus can be fully recharged in 8 to 10 hours (overnight), and can be partly recharged during the day when typically the bus is parked, awaiting its afternoon route.
