The Event

 

"Phaethon 2004" will constitute of two independent events, a circuit race event in a racetrack and a rally race. Starting point for the rally will be the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The race will then lead the cars towards the port city of Patras, then to Ancient Olympia in Southwest Greece, then to Itea and Delphi and then back to Athens.

Characteristics


"Rally" Characteristics

  • Number of Legs: Five (5)

  • Total Distance: 803 km

  • Special Stages: Ten (10)

  • Total Distance of S.S.: 63 km

  • Rules applicable: FIA - FIA Alternative Energies Cup

"Circuit Race" Characteristics

  • Two hours of racing divided in two heats of sixty (60) minutes each (Solar cars). For Solar-Electric cars total distance is 36 km (predetermined number of laps race).

  • Rules applicable: FIA - FIA Alternative Energies Cup

 


 

 

Eligible Vehicles

 

Eligible vehicles will be those powered by energy produced by solar cells (S) according to the technical rules. A second category (SE) is accepted for cars using mixed energy from solar panels and grid, or from solar panels and other renewable energy sources on indirect mode. Entrants can be private or corporate entities.

 

Vehicles of Category I Solar-powered vehicles, according to the FIA Technical Regulations.

  • Class 1: Vehicles with a weight up to 150 kg

  • Class 2: Vehicles with a weight of over 150 kg and up to 300 kg

Note: Prototype Vehicles (single seaters) which, through a traction battery, obtain their power directly from on-board solar generator and which have at least 3 wheels and a weight up to 300 kg. The output power of the solar generator is free but the total surface area of all solar arrays must not exceed 8 sq.m.

 

Vehicles of Category II, III and III A

Solar and/or electrically powered converted, modified, prototype and series production vehicles, according to FIA Technical Regulations.

  • Class 2-4: Vehicles with a weight over 150 kg and up to 750 kg

  • Class 5-7: Vehicles with a weight over 750 kg and up to 1500 kg

Note: Vehicles built for competition with road-using and research purposes, used for testing systems and components and series production vehicles. Minimum height from the lowest part of the windscreen to the ground must be 750 mm. In order to participate in "Phaethon 2004" vehicles must be equipped with an onboard solar array of minimum 80 Wp output power and/or to present a conclusive evidence of possession of an installed system of electric power supply from such a solar array or a hydro-power or a wind generator installation connected to a grid of minimum 600 Wp output power.
