Mineral water is water containing minerals or other dissolved substances that alter its taste or give it therapeutic value. Salts, sulfur compounds, and gases are among the substances that can be dissolved in the water. Mineral water can often be effervescent. Mineral water can be prepared or can occur naturally.
Nelson Kruschandl - healthy living
Traditionally mineral waters would be used or consumed at their source, often referred to as taking the waters or taking the cure, and such sites were referred to as spas, baths or wells. Spa would be used when the water was consumed and bathed in, bath when the water was not generally consumed, and well when the water was not generally bathed in. Often an active tourist centre would grow up around a mineral water site (even in ancient times; see Bath). Such tourist development resulted in spa towns and hydropathic hotels (often shortened to Hydros).
In modern times it is far more common for mineral waters to be bottled at source for distributed consumption. Traveling to the mineral water site for direct access to the water is now uncommon, and in many cases not possible (because of exclusive commercial ownership rights). There are over 3000 brands of mineral water available commercially worldwide and around 150 brands in the United Kingdom.
There are literally hundreds of waters on shelves in supermarkets, but how many are natural and what are the potential health benefits of each one? People drink mineral water for many different reasons. Mostly, it is considered healthier. These days healthy living is high on the family agenda, and for this reason mineral water is selling in higher quantities. Our advice is to check out the label for the ingredients (analysis). In general, natural mineral waters are to be preferred.
MINERAL HEALTH BENEFITS
BORON Found in raisins, prunes, nuts and vegetables. It increases oestrogen and testosterone levels. Appears to affect the metabolism of calcium, magnesium, copper, phosphorus and vitamin D. Might affect bone and joint health. www.healthwell.com
CALCIUM Maintains healthy bones and teeth. Helps to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. Aids heart and muscle contractions, nerve impulses and blood clotting. Eases digestion. Benefits especially growing children and pregnant women. www.healthwell.com
COPPER Needed to absorb and utilize iron. Needed to make A.T.P., the energy the body runs on.

STRONTIUM Has been shown to promote strong, osteoporosis-resistant bones, reduce the pain of bone lesions and may increase bone mass. Also thought to reduce dental cavities.
SILICON A trace mineral, Probably plays a role in making and maintaining connective tissue and normal bone function. There is reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing substantial health benefits. Also found in wholemeal breads and cereals, root vegetables and beer. Silicates, a form of Silicon, are added to some processed foods.
SILVER Was used as a medicine in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Helps to prevent eye infections, is a natural alternative to antibiotics and as a treatment for almost every infectious disease. Again relatively consistent scientific data shows a substantial health benefit. (www healthwell.com). A number of people have experienced dramatic improvements with a variety of skin conditions after applying the water directly onto the skin, in only a few weeks, Trials are well under way as it is thought that “COLLOIDAL SILVER “ could combat the hospital superbug as it is natures own antibiotic. Study any website on “colloidal silver for further info.
ZINC A compound of more than 300 enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults and growth in children; to synthesize protein, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, reduce the duration of colds in adults. Is also found in oysters, meat, eggs, seafood, tofu, and wheat germ.
IRON Helps with iron deficiency anaemia. Essential component of haemoglobin and many enzymes involved in energy metabolism.
MANGANESE Essential for activating enzyme systems, particularly those involved in the synthesis of cartilages. Needed for the storage of glucose in the liver, plus healthy bone growth and insulin. Also needed for healthy skin.
MAGNESIUM Helps to prevent against heart disease. Inhibits blood clots and widens arteries. Normalises dangerous arrythmias. Lowers high blood pressure. Aids in preventing complications of diabetes. Small traces are essential to the workings of the nervous system.
MOLYBDENUM Needed to help with the metabolism of iron. Can reduce sulphite reactive asthma attacks. Also found in vegetables, beans and grains but can become lost in processing.
NITRATE Dilates the small arteries, especially useful in cases of angina. It works by lowering blood pressure, thus taking the load off the heart.
PHOSPHORUS Builds strong bones, maintains skeletal integrity. Helps to form tooth enamel and strengthens teeth. needed to release energy in cells. Essential for the absorption of many nutrients.
POTASSIUM Needed to regulate water balance, levels of acidity and blood pressure. Plays a critical role in the transmission of electrical impulses in the heart.
SELENIUM A trace mineral. Fights infection and protects against disease, a powerful antioxidant, which destroys harmful free radicals, Clinical trials show that a small daily intake of selenium dramatically reduces cancer mortality by 50%, prostate cancer by 63%, colorectal cancers by 46%, overall 37% fewer cancers .It was also found to reduce the risk of lung cancer to a greater degree than stopping smoking. A wide variety of recent studies involving animals and humans have linked such diseases as cystic fibrosis, muscular weakness, myotonic dystrophy, rheumatoid arthritis, with either selenium deficiencies or with what the FDA (food and drug administration ) considers normal selenium levels . This and previous studies indicate that perhaps, Higher levels of Selenium are needed than those specified by the FDA. In addition to having remarkable anti-ageing properties, it is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. ( www.hmscrown.com monitor volume 2 issue 1 ) and www.healthwell.com
FLUORIDE Protects against tooth decay.
