On October 14th at the end of mile 5, the Buckeye Bullet raised the US mile speed record to 314.958 mph for electric vehicles.
In addition to the US record, Buckeye Bullet attained a new international record in the E-III category of 271.737 mph over the flying kilometer.
MESSAGE FROM: Jim Montague 10/16/04 (The
guy with the Zippo cigar lighter and eyeball engineering hat) On behalf of the Rannberg Family and the crew of the Lightning Rod I would like to congratulate all the members of the Buckeye Bullet project for an awesome performance. I would also like to thank you for allowing me to experience it with you.
For me it was more than what you have accomplished. It was also what Ed Rannberg had envisioned on August 23rd 1974. Ed and I stood on the starting line at the Bonneville Salt Flats as Roger Hedlund's Battery Box started down the course to a 175 mph record run. A record that you have taken to over 300 mph. Ed hoped that what we did with the Lightning Rod would encourage others to think beyond what most people think an electric car can do and you have done that. Mr. Rannberg would have been as elated as I am. Thank you again. Jim Montague
